🇲🇽 Gabriela Jáquez: Capturing the Future of Mexican Basketball
Gabriela Jáquez is no longer just a promise for the future of Mexican basketball — she is a presence you can feel every time she steps on the court. From her dominant run at UCLA, where she captured a national championship with a standout performance of 21 points and 10 rebounds in the final, to her leap into the professional level with the Chicago Sky after being selected as the fifth overall pick in the WNBA Draft, her career is already reshaping the landscape of women’s basketball in our region.

Through my lens, I don’t just document performance. I document presence, character, silence, and impact. Because athletes like Gabriela Jáquez are not only building careers — they are reshaping how the world sees women’s basketball in Mexico.
As a sports photographer, moments like these carry a different weight when you experience them from the baseline. I still remember the atmosphere of the tournament: the tension building before tip-off, the energy of the Mexican fans filling the space, and the feeling that something important was unfolding in front of us. Every possession stops being just a play — it becomes a fragment of history.

Beyond the numbers, Gabriela has also used her voice to speak about what is often not seen. Reflecting on her time with the Mexican national team and the talent of her teammates, she has openly addressed the structural gaps and lack of support that women’s basketball in Mexico still faces. With a rare level of maturity, she has spoken about her desire to “start something” that ensures future generations receive the institutional and financial support they deserve.
And that is where her story becomes even more powerful.
For me, photographing athletes with this level of depth completely changes the way I tell the story of sport. Gabriela doesn’t just play to score; she plays with the weight of history on her shoulders. She represents a generation pushing the boundaries of Mexican basketball, dreaming of stages like the Olympic Games and World Championships that once felt distant.
Becoming the first player of Mexican heritage to be chosen in the first round of the WNBA Draft is more than an individual achievement; it is a turning point for an entire sporting ecosystem that is slowly beginning to see itself differently. And today, watching her compete at the highest level in the world — delivering performances of up to 22 points against teams like the New York Liberty — is a reminder of the caliber of athlete we are witnessing in real time.
